Stroll Through Texas & Student History Fair
2017 Texas History Stroll
The Texas Heroes Foundation (THF) invites you to “Stroll Through Texas History on March 2 & 3, 2017 from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, beginning at Acton Baptist Church at 3500 Fall Creek Hwy in Acton. Children can meet Texas Heroes, portrayed by the THF Team, partake in Elizabeth Crockett Memorial Ceremony, make period crafts, see black powder demonstrations, enjoy period music & performing art winners, view the Student History Fair, vote on People’s Choice Award and more.
Awards – $200 best of show. Each category each level: $100 first, $50 second & $25 third and Group Award $100 to be shared. We encourage choirs and other groups to participate in group categories.
Manuscripts must be mailed on or before February 15, 2017
All other entries must be submitted on or before February 26th or 27th of 2017
Texas History event, person, encounter can continue into the 1900s, but must begin prior to Dec. 31, 1899.
Research Manuscripts – Creative/Narrative/Expository/Poetry – Individual entries only. Must be original, factual or historically based, presentedin any written form: Creative/Narrative/Expository/Poetry&Ballads. Entries must be typed and double-spaced. Use a 12 point common font type. Word-count less than 2,000 words. Place your research entry in a folder with brads. Provide a list of sources. (Doesn’t have to be a
annotated bibliography.) Criteria for judging research manuscripts:
1. Historical content and accuracy (even if using a fictional account). 2.Contents relate to the topic of Texas Independence and history prior to the 1900s. 3. Uniqueness of the subject matter and writing style. 4.Content engages the reader. 5. Demonstrates wide, abundant research. 6. Grammar, punctuation, and spelling. If a teacher requires a
manuscript to be entered the student may still enter another project on a different subject. However they can not enter two categories on the

Exhibits – Open to individual and groups. Exhibit size – no larger than 40 inches wide, 30 inches deep, and 6 feet high. Entries can include any combination of photos, research paper, artwork, 3-D models, etc. The theme/topic of the exhibit must be obvious. Students should be prepared to answer questions about their research and project. Criteria for judging exhibits:1. Historical content and accuracy. 2. Exhibit relates to the topic of Texas history prior to the 1900s. 3. Exhibit is organized, has visual impact, & correctly uses maps, photos, etc. 4.Demonstrates wide and abundant research.5. Clearly demonstrates the chosen theme and topic.
Artwork – Open to individual and group entries. Entries can include any painting or print style, sculpture, photography, garments, or any other art form. Artwork will be judged using the following criteria:1. Historical content and accuracy. 2. How well the artwork relates to the topic of Texas Independence and history prior to the 1900s 3. Creativity, technique, and uniqueness of style of artwork. 4. Visual impact. 5. All art work must be mounted stable enough to display or hang. If drawing or art work is on plain sheet of paper, flimsy, or cannot be properly displayed please attach it to something stable such as card stock, cardboard, foam-core, etc. to support the work so that it does not get bent,
torn, etc. and can be displayed or hung up. 6. Artwork must be clean, not torn, bent, damaged, smeared. 7. Show your pride of work by presenting a clean, neat piece of artwork.
Videos/Power Point – Open to individual and group entries. Entries must be 20 minutes or less and can include either presentation or creative style of any kind. The video can be made from live video recording or using a combination of stills such as photos or graphics. You are welcome to consult with a video professional for tips on making the video, but you cannot engage his or her services for shooting, editing,
etc. Criteria for judging videos: Historical content and accuracy (even if using a fictional account) 2. Relevance to the topic of Texas Independence and history prior to the 1900s. 3. Creativity and uniqueness of style. 4. Video flows well, is organized and clearly understood.
5. Good visuals and sound quality. 6. Engages the viewer.
Performing Arts – Ballads, scenes, duets, solo and groups 1. Historical content and accuracy (even if using a fictional account). 2. Relevance to
the topic of Texas Independence and history prior to the 1900s. 3. Creativity and uniqueness of style. 4. Presentation flows well, is organized
and clearly understood. 5. Historically correct details in the production including costumes and props. 6. How engaging the presentation is to
the viewer. You may incorporate video images in your presentations. Example video or slide show with music, dancing singing.
Presentation for judging will be done on Tuesday between 4-9 pm. Winners will present at the THF Student History Fair. Bring your entry

Website Designs – Open to individual and group entries. Entries can include either presentation or creative style of any kind of web design. It can be made live on-line or saved on a portable drive. The entry must open in html using a combination of original text, photos, video and graphics. These entries will be on display during the history fair. You are welcome to consult with a web design professional for tips on making the video, but you cannot engage his or her services for shooting, editing, etc. 1. Historical content and accuracy (even if using a fictional account) 2. Relevance to the topic of Texas Independence prior to the 1900s. 3. Creativity and uniqueness of style. 4. Website flows well, is organized and clearly understood. 5. Clear visuals and sound are required. 6. Must engage viewer.
All entries: Parents and/or students must bring the entry to Acton Baptist Church at 3500 Fall Creek Hwy Feb. 26, 3-5 pm and Feb. 27, 2-7 pm. You need two entry forms completed for each entry. Entries MUST be picked up at the end of the awards presentation at 6:30 pm on March 3 at Acton Baptist Church. All entries not picked up will be discarded.
